Are you shopping for a new mobile phone on a budget? Here we review the 10 best second hand mobiles and used phones to shop for in 2017. What phone to buy on a tight-budget to get the best features and reliablility from your cheap iPhone or Android...

The primary reason for buying a high-spec second hand mobile phone is because you're 18 months in to your 24 month contract and you drop your shiney phone and watch in horror as the screen shatters beneath you - A used phone to fill the gap until you get an upgrade is the ideal solution. Alternatively; thrifty folk like myself will shop around for a phone which provides all the features you need with a lower price tag than others.

best used phones 2017

  • Cheap used phones to look out for in 2017
  • The best phones from Apple and Android manufacturers
  • What phone can you buy for your money and how much should you pay?

From the Huawei P9 and P9 Lite to Apple's iPhone offerings and more from LG and HTC, which are the best phones to look out for and what can we expect the prices to be?

I use a pay as you go sim card - The simple reason being that it gives me far more flexibility with the phone I can use (and how often I can change it), as well as that most of what I can do can be done over Wifi, so why should I fork out for minutes and texts which I will simply never use?

I use EE - I pay them under £5 a month and in return I get just about 1GB of data and plenty of minutes and the soon-to-be-obselete texts too.  Since having this sim I've had a Samsung Galaxy Note, a Samsung Galaxy S4 and now use a Huawei P9 Lite which after much shopping around cost me £149.00 brand new. My Huawei P9 Lite offers me ALL the features I could ever want from a mobile phone at about 1/5th the price of a high-end iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. NFC, 13MP camera (and fantastic quality at that), a very accurate finger print reader, a crystal clear IPS screen - I feel like I have a top-end phone and my pocket is better for it.

So the phones I've had over the last few years have been long lasting - By which I mean they have had the power and build quality to see me through years of use and still maintain a reasonable re-sale value at the end of my use. So here are the best used phones to watch out for in 2017 if you want the best tech in your smartphone while ensuring you have a handset that's build to last and perform with ever evolving technology.

1. Used Huawei P9

Used Huawei P9

Expect to pay: around £250 used (good condition)

Ideal for: Anyone. This phone is packed with features and the latest tech. Ideal for highly demanding users.

Watch out for: Battery performance - The non-replaceable battery unit means once the battery weakens there's nothing you can do.

The Huawei P9 is the big brother of it's very-high scoring lite version and just pushes ahead with strengthened glass screen, advanced processing power and dual cameras for a deeper richer photograph. If you're in the market for a really powerful used android phone which will keep up with the new guys for the next 12 months then this is the ideal solution. Battery life is fantastic, outperforming any other phone I have tested and the quality feel and perfect responsiveness is fantastic. I expect the phone to be more than capable as a brilliant used-phone solution.

2. Used Huawei P9 Lite

huawei p9 lite

Expect to pay: around £110 used (good condition)

Ideal for: Anyone on a budget. This phone packs features only otherwise found in new premium phones. My personal favourite for the price

Watch out for: Battery performance - The non-replaceable battery unit means once the battery weakens there's nothing you can do

The word "Lite" really has no place on this phone. The Huawei P9 Lite offers features usually reserved for premium smartphones with much higher price tags and if anything this model is succeeded only by glass-screen quality. The camera and processor, although weaker than in it's big brother the P9 are strong... excellent in fact. A 5.5 inch IPS screen offering a very high pixel density and the 3GB of ram offers Android 6 plenty of room to breathe and the look and feel are far from "lite". The really good news here is that with new units retailing at only around £150 from EE and other shops, second hand P9 Lite's prices will fall considerably; meaning you can get your hands on one of these for less than £100 through classified ads and 2nd hand sellers.

3. Used Samsung Galaxy S6 (not the 'edge' version)

Used Samsung Galaxy S6

Expect to pay: around £250 used (good condition)

Ideal for: Heavy phone users looking to get a well-recognised brand with reliability and performance to match.

Watch out for: Non-original batteries and chargers. Always try to use original power items to ensure safety.

The flagship Samsung phone of 2016, the Samsung Galaxy S6 (also available as the S6 edge with a curve-edged screen) offers premium phone design with high end features. The Samsung S6 price tag continues to fall throughout late 2016 and into 2017 meaning you can get your hands on a used Samsung Galaxy S6 for a very low price. To bag a real bargain, grab a Samsung Galaxy S6 with a broken screen (make sure the phone is still working!). You can get the phone for less than £100 and get the screen professionally replaced for around £50. £150 for a Samsung Galaxy S6? Sounds good to me.

4. Used iPhone 6s

Used iPhone 6s

Expect to pay: £250-£300

Ideal for: Apple lovers on a budget

Watch out for: Battery life. As with all iPhone's the battery is non-replaceable

iPhone's have a tendency to hold their value very well until the updates stop, and in 2017 this will be no different I'm sure. So the value will stay high but you're buying a used iPhone which has the modern look and feel and excellent features. If you're partial to Apple products and on a budget then this is the best model to shop for. In order to ensure the value stays high for when it comes to you selling it on look for a phone in cosmetically good condition and keep the software up to date. Neutral colours like black, white or silver will be easier to sell but may cost you a little more to buy.

5. Used Samsung Galaxy S5

Used Samsung Galaxy S5

Expect to pay: £100

Ideal for: A performance lover who isn't driven by fashion

Watch out for: Rooted and flashed ROM's can cause serious software issues

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was a great success of a flagship phone for Samsung in 2015, offering a bigger screen and upgraded just-about-everything from it's predecessor the Galaxy S4. An octa-core processor and plenty of ram means the handset handles Android 5.1 with ease and modern, demanding games still perform very well. So the only real reason for the price dropping to below £100 for used Galaxy S5's in 2017 will be that the phone is no longer seen as "new". It still performs very well and will offer you far more in perfance and features than equivelantly priced new phones.

6. Used HTC 10

Used HTC 10

Expect to pay: £250

Ideal for: Performance over price - HTC generally target the fashion concious who disregard the brand

Watch out for: Non original software and memory as nowadays the 16GB version will fill up fast

HTC as a brand have been making excellent and attractive handsets since before the iPhone came about and were competitively alongside Samsung for some time during the late Noughties. Nowadays however they seem to have been somewhat left behind with regards popularity but don't let this put you off; their handsets are solid and reliable too. Usually running the latest versions of Android and doing so well - The HTC 10 is a competitive performer with plenty to offer, it just doesn't carry a brand name as desireable as others.

7. Used LG G5

Used LG G5

Expect to pay: £150

Ideal for: Design and reliability - The alternative phone fan's choice

Watch out for: Wear and tear. This is a tough phone so signs of hard use actually mean it's been battered!

LG have come a long way with regards design and innovation in their smartphones and the G5 is no different. Offering interchangeable batteries, expandable memory and a full metal body, the LG G5 is a brilliant used phone option as it's been built to last and this is obvious from the design. The LG G5 also offers interchangeable modules allowing you to add and remove features depending on what you'll be using the phone for that day.

8. Used iPhone 6

Used iPhone 6

Expect to pay: £150

Ideal for: A first time iPhone'er or tight budget Apple fan

Watch out for: Battery life (non-replaceable) and limited memory

A step back as far as iPhone's go, the iPhone 6 is Apple's offering from way back in 2015 however it still offers a competitive array of features and performance. What makes this used iPhone a great choice to buy on the second hand market? The fingerprint reader has been fine-tuned in this model and the camera and social media integration is excellent. This is a great affordable iPhone solution in the used phone market.

9. Used iPhone SE

Used iPhone SE

Expect to pay: £190

Ideal for: A power seeker unphased by fashion

Watch out for: Damaged phone housing and battery performance

The easiest way to describle the Apple iPhone SE is an iPhone 6s in a 5s' body. The iPhone SE is a compliment to the used phone market as it packs a real power-punch but does so without the flashy modern exterior. Expect plenty of performance and onboard utilities including NFC at a much better price than the more up-to-date iPhone 6s.

10. Used Huawei MATE 8

Used Huawei Mate 8

Expect to pay: £175

Ideal for: Business users - Tablet sized phone

Watch out for: Size - Does this one even fit in your pocket?

More a "Phablet" than a phone, the huge 6 inch screened phone packs a lot in but does so in a way oversized shell. It's a real 'geek phone' and offers much more for a low price than you could expect from Samsung or Apple's much higher-priced alternatives. There's no subtlety here so be aware that you're getting a big phone for your money. The design of the Huawei Mate 8 is such that it's target audience is niche and so we can expect prices to come down quickly - A smart purchase for the thrifty phone shopper.

If you're in the market for a used phone; a second hand mobile from Android or Apple iPhone which packs a punch and offers the performance of most new phones released in 2017 then this list should offer you everything. Look for the phone's cosmetic condition to be good and keep it that way to ensure you can use the phone and then sell it on for a great price too.
